Before we learn about how to register domains in India, let’s see what a “domain name” is. A domain name is the address that users type into their address bar in order to arrive at your website. They have been around since the advent of World Wide Web. The domain name is an important part in establishing your institution or brand as no two domain names can be exactly alike, but can look similar. In order to register domains in India, especially domain, you must be affiliated with an accredited educational institution in India. This could be a school, college, or university. Furthermore, the government of India or a state government must recognize the institution.

In order to receive the either domains, following important points to be realized. They are:

  1. Centrally recognized or affiliated primary or secondary schools. E.g.: CBSE / ICSE
  2. Centrally or regionally recognized colleges
  3. The UGC or the central or state government should approve universities
  4. Technical Institutions applying for domain should be recognized. 
  5. The State govt should identify vocational training institutes. Vocational training Council, etc.
  6. The skill development state or central government ministry recognizes the skill development centers.

In order to register domains in India, the process is:

1. Identify a Registrar

Several authorized registrars can register domain names. You will need to choose one and create an account with them. ERNET India is the registrar for, and domains.

2. Check Availability

Before registering your desired domain name, you will need to check if it is available. You can check the availability in ERNET.

3. Submit Your Application

Once you have found an available domain name, you will need to apply to register it. The application will typically require information such as your institution’s name, accreditation details, and contact information.

4. Provide Documentation

You will be required to provide documentation to verify your institution’s authenticity and your affiliation with it. This documentation may include your institution’s registration papers or proof of accreditation.

5. Wait for Approval

Your application will be reviewed by the relevant authorities. It may take several days or weeks for your application to be approved. 

6. Pay the Registration Fee

Once your application is approved, the payment of registration fee is required to complete the process.
